Haiti - Environment : Towards compulsory reforestation in schools

On Friday a meeting was held at the Ministry of National Education, led by Jackson Pléteau, Chief of Staff of the Minister of Education Cadet, attended by Nicole Yolette Altidor, the Director General of the Ministry of the Environment, Guichard Doré, Special Adviser to President Moïse and senior staff of the technical directorates and the coordination of the General Directorate of the MENFP.

This meeting aimed to follow up on the civic activity planned for September 2018 of mandatory reforestation in schools, the progress of the project and harmonize the actions to be undertaken in terms of implementation, the modalities and articulation in actions by the relevant ministries.

The exchanges provided a common understanding of the next steps to be undertaken in this project. At the end of the meeting, it was decided to create, inter alia, a multi-sectoral Committee for the revision of the documents and for the follow-up of the actions to be carried out.

It should be noted that beyond this reforestation civic activity which must involve students, teachers and school officials of the Republic, the two Ministries (Education and Environment) propose to work on a structuring approach to the environment in schools taking into account all aspects of the school curriculum [in the new secondary program, reforestation will be considered as a compulsory subject] teacher training and the availability of accompanying teaching tools for the implementation of the medium and long term of such an initiative.
