Haiti - Security : Installation of a seismological station in the Artibonite

The Ministry of the Environment through the National Observatory on the Environment (ONEV), this week proceeded, in collaboration with the Bureau of Mines and Energy, at the start of work on the installation of a new seismological station at the Charles Colimon Hospital located in Petite Rivière (Dept. of Artibonite).

Composed of a seismograph and an accelerometer, this new station has just strengthened the national seismic monitoring network whose mission is to record in real time earthquakes.

In her speech Nicole Y. Altidor, the Director General of the Ministry explained "this seismological station will ensure a better insertion of seismic risks in the appropriate decision-making of the Government [...] It will interconnect with the other two adjacent stations placed respectively in the North and Central Plateau, in order to gather reliable information."

The engineer Dwinel Bélizaire, Director of ONEV reminded that besides this station, several are already installed on the national territory, including one in the North, in the Center, two in the Department of the West, one in the South and South-East and two others in the Grand'Anse and announced that preparations were underway for the forthcoming installation of a station at Môle Saint Nicolas.

Recall that the establishment of these seismological stations in the country is a response to the frequent earthquakes registered and is made possible thanks to the technical and financial assistance of countries such as Mexico and Spain as well as the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).
