On Friday, taking advantage of the fact that the population was mobilized to follow the quarter-finals of the 2018 Russia World Cup, and in order to comply with the IMF's "Staff-Monitored Program" (SMP) signed last February, the Government published an official notice of fuel price increases at the pump.

As soon as the information was known on the social networks, and in front of the importance of the increases (between ± 40 and 50%) people took the streets and the violence broke out in the capital where the situation quickly became very difficult and confused.

In accordance with the law of 9 March 1995 instituting the Variable Excise Tax on petroleum products, the Ministries of Economy and Finance, of Trade and Industry advise the general public, importers, distributors and consumers of petroleum products in particular that from Saturday, July 7, 2018 prices in force in the national territory are fixed as follows:

Gazoline: 309 Gourdes

Gasoil: 264 Gourdes

Kerosene: 262 Gourdes

In summary, with reference to the last official increase of May 15, 2017 https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-20940-haiti-flash-new-fuel-prices-in-haiti-official.html As of today, the gallon of gasoline that was sold at 224 gourdes per gallon increased from 85 gourdes to 309 gourdes (+ 38%); the diesel which was sold 179 Gourds increased from 85 Gourdes to 264 Gourdes (+ 47%) and kerosene which was sold 173 Gourdes increased from 89 Gourdes to 262 Gourdes (+ 51%)

Recall that in 2017, the Government had proposed to the unions of public transport an increase passing the prices respectively to 305 gourdes, 237 gourdes and 231 gourdes, proposal which had been rejected and the Government had retreated before the rise of the violence by applying lower increases (+ 18.5% on gasoline, + 20% on diesel and + 17% on kerosene
