Haiti - Riots : The Episcopal Conference points to the irresponsibility of leaders
The bishops of the Catholic Church members of the Episcopal Conference of Haiti (CEH) indicate in a note of conjuncture published this week, having followed very carefully what happens in the country since July 6, 2018 when the government decided to increase the price of fuel at the pump https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-24887-haiti-flash-rising-fuels-at-least-two-deaths-and-many-damage-in-the-capital.html and then suspend that decision https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-24889-haiti-flash-the-government-suspend-its-decision.html

"We deplore all the violence that has resulted from it on people and property. It hurts because we know how difficult it is to build. Destroying, burning has never been a solution. On the contrary, it creates more unemployment in the country and a fear among all those who would invest to generate jobs [...] We express our deepest condolences with our sympathies to all the victims of these recent events and we pray for the rest of the souls of the dead. And in the face of all this we ask the leaders of the country to take their responsibilities. However, We can not stop only on the consequences, we must go to the causes in order to find a solution that can lead the country to stability, peace and material, social, economic, cultural and spiritual development.

Today's reality is a consequence of the irresponsibility of many of our leaders. Because we must recognize it : the population has been suffering too much for decades. The people are in misery, they are exhausted, they can not take it anymore. It has long hoped and wants to change its situation. For that it wants a power, a Government that can hear its cries of distress and really work for its well-being.

We are at a crossroads where we must act urgently as a people and decide as such where we want to go together. All the forces of the country must participate in this constructive dialogue. If everyone does not participate, it will be harder for us to take the road of the future and development.

[...] Us, Catholic Bishops of the local Church of Haiti, say to the people with all the force of our conviction: "do not be afraid! You are the people that God loves; nothing must make you lose heart "(Dn 10: 19). Valiant Haitian people, vengeance, violence, division will not bring you anything. Your actions must be led by love, reconciliation, justice and fraternity. The Lord is with you and continues to watch over you through Our Lady of Perpetual Help, patron saint of Haiti."
