Haiti - FLASH : Banks attacked, gas station burned, opposition is radicalized
Sunday, the 4th day of the demonstration, on a backdrop of gunshots and bursts of sporadic automatic weapons and in a smoky atmosphere of burning tires, the day was very hectic in Port-au-Prince, where the damage is expected to be considerable. The demonstrators were less numerous but highly motivated, having obviously chosen to radicalize to express their anger and demand the departure of the Head of State.

The situation remained very tense in Port-au-Prince where most of the stores remained closed, while the streets were deserted by the population who had preferred to remain cautiously at home. Many barricades of burning tires have been reported on several riads, including John Brown, Bourdon, Canapé Vert and Lalue.

The demonstrators multiplied the barricades on their course. Cars were vandalized while others were burned, shop windows were smashed and public buildings looted.

The police repeatedly clashed with protesters on the road to Delmas and the airport used tear gas to regain control of the situation...

On the road to Nazon, people threw an explosive device at a UNIBANK generator, also throwing stones at the financial institution. At Pavée Street, the Sogebank Branch was attacked by hooded individuals who broke windows and attempted to burn the bank. Also on Pavée Street, individuals set fire to a gas station near the National Palace, the rapid intervention of firefighters helped prevent the worst and the spread of the fire.

Agents from the General Security Unit of the National Palace (USGPN) and the Departmental Unit of Maintenance of Order (UDMO) have been deployed to secure the perimeters around the Palace.

At least one casualty is reported in the Southeast and several wounded, some of them shot through the country in a first (partial and provisional assessment).

The situation remains uncertain on Monday, February 11 in the capital, the metropolitan area and the main provincial cities.

The Haitian National Police reminded its police officers to remain professional and not to give in to provocations; to repress all acts of vandalism and to guarantee the safety of life and property by reinforcing the security of public buildings, premises and installations of strategic importance such as the Parliament, the premises of the Superior Court of Accounts, the General Directorate of Taxes, Customs, Electricity of Haiti, DINEPA, gas stations, ports and airports, premises of diplomatic and consular missions, trade among others...
