Haiti - FLASH : 5th day of demonstrations, violence, looting, vandalism, popular anger grows 12/02/2019 07:52:12
Traffic was still blocked in several parts of the capital by barricades of burning tires. The situation was also "hot" among others in Les Cayes, Gonaïves, Jérémie, Plaisance and Mirebalais, Saint-Marc, Hinche, Cap-Haïtien, Fort-Liberté where economic activities were paralyzed as in Port-au-Prince. Roadblocks were reported in several provincial towns where demonstrations were taking place, a majority of schools, businesses and administrations remained closed. Most of the national roads were blocked. Coming from Cité Soleil and the popular neighborhoods of the metropolitan area, the angry demonstrators, in an atmosphere smoky by the burning of tires, threw stones at companies on their way. They vandalized and burned cars and smashed shop windows. Numerous scenes of looting were reported among others at Delmas, Airport Road, High Street and Pétion Ville, before the police managed to disperse very aggressive protesters... At Delmas 77, the mini market of a gas pump was looted, in Delmas 83 more looting was reported, the police arrived too late, there was nothing left when he arrived... The National Police of Haiti (PNH) and the special units including among others agents of the Intervention and Maintenance Corps (CIMO), have intervened many times and on several fronts, to disperse the demonstrators, mostly young people from the poorest neighborhoods, but also to hunt thugs and looters, making extensive use of tear gas canisters. At Delmas 103, near Pétion-ville, protesters clashed with CIMO agents, before being temporarily dispersed with tear gas. Sporadic shooting was heard in Pétion-ville but also in several neighborhoods of Port-au-Prince causing panic in the population... A crowd of demonstrators from Carrefour was dispersed by the police at the rue des Casernes. Individuals attacked the National Bank of Credit (BNC) located between Delmas 52 and 54 with the intention of looting it. All windows of the branch of the BNC were broken, The police made a tough intervention and arrested inside the bank 5 individuals from Cité Soleil. A young police officer woman was shot in the arm while the individuals were trying to loot the bank, she was rushed to the hospital.
