Haiti - Chile : 8th voluntary return flight of Haitians

On Wednesday as part of the Chilean Government's "Orderly Humanitarian Return Plan", the 8th flight of returnees took off from Santiago, Chile to Port-au-Prince, with 89 Haitian citizens aboard a plane of the Chilean Air Force, confirmed Rodrigo Ubilla, the Chilean Under-Secretary of the Interior.

With this 8th flight, 1,262 Haitians have been voluntarily repatriated to Haiti since the launch of the "Orderly Humanitarian Return Plan" of the Chilean Government https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-25877-haiti-flash-chile-launches-its-free-voluntary-return-plan-to-haiti.html and the first flight of returnees in November 2018 https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-26085-haiti-social-return-from-chile-difficult-for-176-compatriots.html

Álvaro Bellolio, the head of the immigration department of the Ministry of the Interior, said that there are only 200 Haitian citizens in Chile left on the list of voluntary return program stating that for this reason "during the month of May, we will do the last flight [...] we will evaluate the continuity of the program, but we do not think it will happen beyond the first half of 2019."

Bellolio mentioned that in all cases "the program is always open, and we will help anyone who wishes to return freely and voluntarily to their country of origin."

He also explained that the voluntary return program had generally been "very positive" and that more than 80% of the registered people had regularized their visa and documents to stay in Chile, but others chose to go home. them, looking for new opportunities or to get together with their family.

Recall that Haitians who benefited from the voluntary return program and their support by Chile, legally committed in exchange not to return to Chile in the next 9 years.
