Haiti - DR : Signing of a bilateral agreement on responsible fishing on the North Coast

A Memorandum of Understanding to eliminate illegal fishing, preserve marine ecosystems and make sustainable use of aquatic resources on the North Coast, in particular to Montecristi (Northwest Dominican Republic) and Three Bays in North-East of Haiti (Bays of Caracol, Fort-Liberté and Limonade), was signed under the auspices of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), between Haiti represented by Jean Robert Badio, Director of the Biodiversity and Fisheries and the Dominican Republic represented by Milton Ginebra, Director of the Fisheries and Aquaculture Council.

The authorities of the two countries undertake in this agreement to draw up a "Binational Action Plan on the Sustainable Management of Fisheries in the 3 Bays and Montecristi Protected Area" aimed at the conservation of ecosystems, the restoration of marine productivity, economic viability and social balance.

The two parties also commit themselves to establishing "a fisheries management system that allows the sustainable use of fisheries resources, the conservation of critical ecosystems and the promotion of activities that can improve fisheries. livelihoods [...]"

Following this signing, Ginebra said the agreement aims to improve the quality of fishing, the lives of fishermen, the protection of corals and marine plants and the establishment of fishing restrictions in conservation areas and suitable for fishing.
