Haiti - Turks and Caicos Islands : The exodus of Haitians continues, 13 out of 22 boats intercepted since January

At a meeting of the National Security Council at the end of April in Providenciales in the Turks and Caicos Islands (TCI), Police Commissioner James Smith briefly outlined the figures for the current year.

He said that in late April the number of illegal migrants intercepted in 13 overcrowded boats from Haiti by sea was 1.352.

Moreover, he acknowledged that 9 other boats overloaded with Haitian migrants had managed to pass through the cracks of the border defense of the Turks and Caicos Islands and that consequently, several hundred Haitians have entered the territory of the islands of the archipelago and currently live illegally within the population.

In addition to the dangers and tragedies of the sea, he mentioned the risks represented by these Haitians, some of whom sometimes carry weapons and narcotics on the territory, which contributes, according to him, to the increase in violence on the islands. Recalling that last March, 3 packets of cannabis were discovered and seized on a boat carrying 86 Haitian "boat people".
