Haiti - Security : Several thousand people took the streets to denounce the rapes

Sunday, following the collective rapes of students from Quisqueya University (UNIQ) and the University of Port-au-Prince on May 17 and 20 https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-27800-haiti-security-female-students-victims-of-gang-rapes.html thousands of students, teenage girls, academics, politicians, human rights defenders and ordinary citizens, mostly wearing white T-shirts on which were printed messages including "freedom for women, prison for rapists", "Justice yes, violence not", "Down with impunity", walked peacefully on the streets of Port-au-Prince to UNIQ's call to protest rapes perpetrated against women in general and university students in particular.

The march started in front of the UNIQ premises in Turgeau, to continue through the Capital before ending on the Place de la Constitution in the Champ de Mars.

Although there are no official statistics on rape in Haiti, feminist activist Pascale Solages has revealed on the radio of the capital that according to the partial data of feminist organizations for the defense of women's rights , at least 10 rapes are committed every day in Haiti, stressing that this number is much lower than reality, since these figures only take into account the women who decided to talk about it. According to the latest study of the Ministry of Health, published in July 2017, one in eight women report having suffered sexual violence at some point in their lives.

"We are fed up with cases of rape and impunity [...] Violence is becoming a natural phenomenon and society is beginning to cultivate a culture of tolerance for aggression against women : must say no !" Lamented Rector Jacky Lumarque of Quisqueya University who participated in this march.
