Haiti - Industry : Health and safety at work in the textile

On Saturday, April 30, Better Work Haiti, will host more than 3,000 garment workers at the first fair on the health and safety at work to take place in the industrial park SONAPI (Buildings 48 & 49, and the Trauma Centre of OFATMA ) between 10am-5pm. This event will bring together leaders and workers from 27 factories in the capital of the country to raise awareness of issues related to health and safety at work.

The fair, on the health and safety at work is organized by Better Work Haiti so that business leaders and workers can better know the preventive measures they can take in their plants." Preventing accidents and ensure good working conditions is the responsibility of everyone in the workplace," said Richard Lavallée, Program Chief of Better Work Haïti.

In Haiti, the evaluations conducted by the program Better Work show that in the textile-clothing factories in Haiti, is one of the aspects the least in accordance with the national labour legislation. The consulting services and training of Better Work Haïti help the plants to meet these challenges.

Local organizations, including the Centre for the Promotion of Women Workers (CPFO), the Office of Industrial Accidents, Illness and Maternity (OFATMA), the Support Group against cancer, PSI-Haiti and the Haitian Foundation for Diabetes and Cardiovascular Disease, will attend the fair by providing by providing basic health care to the workers present. Haiti Better Work, expects offer for free 550 general consultations, gynecological and dermatological as well as testing for sexually transmitted infections HIV/AIDS and diabetes, and for the early detection of breast cancer and prostate cancer.

Better Work is a unique partnership programme between the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the International Finance Corporation (IFC). Launched in February 2007, the programme aims to improve both compliance with labour standards and competitiveness in global supply chains. Better Work Haiti, funded by the US Department of labour, provides provides services for evaluation and advice to the export Haitian industry of clothing. Funds for additional activities come from the Programm Human Resources and Skills Development Canada.
