Thursday Jocelyne Colas Noël the Executive Director of the National Episcopal Commission Justice and Peace (CE/JILAP) who presented the latest report of the Commission, reiterated its alert to growing insecurity in the capital. In recent weeks, attacks, kidnappings and killings have increased south of Port-au-Prince, including Martissant, scene of violent acts, while gangs take control of the Bicentenaire. In the communes of Carrefour, Tabarre and Croix-des-Bouquets in particular, the statistics reveal that the crime rate persists.

According to an CE/JILAP count, 84 people were shot dead and 6 in the metropolitan area in the second quarter of 2019 (April to June). With 70 dead, Port-au-Prince is the most violent municipality in the country where people live in fear and anguish.

According to the report, 9 police officers and four children were killed in the second quarter, while police officers shot dead 12 people.

Colas believes the police do not have sufficient resources to stop banditry in the region, noting that the population does not feel the real effects of police intervention, despite the arrest of several gang leaders. Phenomena such as kidnappings reappear in the country.

"Too much is too much," said Colat, saying the Commission considers it necessary that prompt action be taken by the competent authorities, while denouncing "a lack of will" of political actors to fight crime and insecurity in the country.
