Haiti - FLASH : The Dominican army sends new reinforcements to the border with Haiti
In anticipation of new socio-political unrest in Haiti at the start of 2020 and to deal with the return attempts of the many illegal Haitians who have left to spend the holidays with their families in Haiti, the Minister of Defense of the Dominican Republic Rubén Paulino Sem, ordered Tuesday, December 31, the sending of 1,200 additional soldiers from different army units, to strengthen surveillance of the border with Haiti.

Minister Rubén Paulino Sem, recalled that the army, the navy, the air force, the specialized border security body (CESFRONT), the national police, the Directorate General of Migration (DGM) and the Customs service carried out joint and effective work and he urged soldiers stationed along the border to exercise their authority with respect for human dignity and human rights.

For his part, the Commander General of the army, Estanislaco Gonell, explained that the military device at the border, in addition to the fight against the illegal migration of Haitians on Dominican territory, was also aimed at fighting the smuggling of weapons and of goods, drug trafficking, the fight against transnational crime and the protection of the environment and natural resources.

With these new reinforcements, it is now close to 11,000 soldiers who are deployed along the border with Haiti and at strategic points, or almost 18% of all active-duty military personnel in the Dominican Republic...
