Haiti - Environment : Environmental protection is the responsibility of each Haitian 01/06/2011 12:51:06 Gesner Champagne, President and Director of the Foundation Seguin, said that currently more than 50,000 shrubs were planted, noting that the most of the work had already been made. He argues that in less than two months, the goal can be achieved. He recalled that currently 20 hectares of land have been reforested, 10 linear kilometers of wire fences were erected to protect the trees planted, 15,000 fruit trees were planted and 20 million gourds [± 40 gdes = 1 USD] have already been injected into the community as a "cash for work" project. The President of the Foundation noted that "the protection of the environment should be the concern of every Haitian, not just the Foundation" He said that he is open to dialogue with any organization or institution working in this domain to share experience for the good of the country. For Gesner Champagne, it is more necessary than ever to continue to develop and strengthening a national consciousness on the issue of deforestation in the country. National Park "La Visite" was created in 1983 to protect the flora from the deforestation. Covering an area of 30 km2, it is located in the chain of la Selle [South-East of Haiti] and peaks at 2.680 meters and extends to the Dominican border.
