Haiti - Politic : The UN Security Council concerned about the situation in Haiti
Friday, the United Nations Security Council expressed concern over the prolonged crisis in Haiti and asked stakeholders to work together to tackle the underlying drivers of instability "Council members noted with concern the prolonged crisis in Haiti and the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic. They reaffirmed their support for the Haitian people and urged the Government of Haiti to ensure a coordinated response to the pandemic" According to the press release read by Anne Gueguen, Deputy Permanent Representative of France to the United Nations, who chaired the meeting in camera by videoconference.

The Council also reiterated the need for Haitian stakeholders to work together to combat the underlying factors of instability and for the Government of Haiti to continue work on the necessary political, economic and social reforms and to continue preparations for timely elections, the statement added.

Before the meeting behinh closed doors, the Security Council held a public meeting to hear a briefing by Helen La Lime, the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Haiti.

Extracts from Helen La Lime's speec :h

"[...] Like most countries in the world, Haiti is currently in the grip of the Covid-19 pandemic [...] which is putting its already fragile health system and its meager social safety net to the test.

Three months to the day after President Jovenel Moïse declared a health emergency following the confirmation of the first cases of coronavirus, the authorities still have great difficulty in opening medical centers dedicated to the treatment of infected patients. A country of over 11 million inhabitants, Haiti currently has the capacity to treat only a few hundred patients at a time [...] This situation is partly due to less than optimal coordination within the State apparatus, both at national level and at that of communities, as well as insufficient funding of the national response plan. It is also the result of fierce opposition from local populations to the opening of such centers near their homes, an expression of the climate of denial, stigma and discrimination that persists in the country.

The pandemic, which has accelerated in the past month, has so far officially affected more than 4,900 people and left 84 people dead. Even if its real balance sheet is probably much heavier, its effects are only beginning to be felt by the citizens of Haiti [...] Due to the multiple interconnected crises that have affected the country in recent years, the Haitian economy contracted 1.2% in 2019 and is expected to contract further by 4% this year. [...] The specter of a further increase in unemployment is loomng on the horizon, the Gourde continues to devalue against the United States dollar and inflation is constantly above 20%. In the absence of sufficient resources to support Haiti's exit from the recession in which it is plunged, the hard-won gains in security and development over the past fifteen years risk being dashed, and an initially internal problem could become a regional problem, if the already alarming humanitarian situation continues to worsen and if an increasing number of Haitians are tempted to seek a better fortune abroad… [...]"
