Haiti - Reconstruction : «Building Back Better Communities» 16/06/2011 13:42:13 The President Michel Martelly, the former Prime Minister Jean Max Belleriveand the formerPresident Bill Clinton, visited the contest site as part of the Haiti's Housing week. The opportunity for the Head of State to stress that it was time to "reshape our communities, to appropriate our neighborhoods, and to provide spaces that respect the human dignity and the environment." For his part, former President Clinton, said he hopes that "all the technology deployed on this project will ever be available to all Haitians. That they no longer have to pay more for electricity, and that drinking water is no longer a rare commodity..." This housing project, approved by the Interim Haiti Recovery Commission (IHRC), was implemented by the Ministry of Tourism and the Haitian Fund for Economic and Social Assistance (FAES). The Clinton Foundation provided funding through the IHRC to the Ministry of Tourism for management of the project, and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) funded the land preparation in Zoranje. The "Build Back Better Communities" project launched in November 2010 with an international design competition seeking innovative, appropriate, low-cost, yet high-quality solutions for Haiti’s particular housing needs. The contest received over 360 submissions. During a conference held at "Karibe Convention Center" in Petion-Ville in January, 83 finalists out of 140, have presented to the public their models. The prototype house, built in real size [over a hundred], to "Zoranje" will be exposed to the public, for two months from July. Then families will be chosen to inhabit them, for a period of 6 months. During their stay in these houses, families will have to complete a questionnaire that will enable authorities to know whether these buildings meet the expectations of their occupants. To be selected, these houses must take into account the environmental standards and provide a maximum of security for their occupants, especially in case of possible earthquakes said the architect and urban planner Edward Allen Junior of Ministry of Tourism. A jury of architects, engineers and sociologists will examine the responses of tenants to be able to choose. The companies selected will be able thereafter "establish plants in Haiti for a large-scale manufacturing of homes likely to respond to the housing needs of the country", clarified Paul Emile Simon, Project Director at the Ministry of Tourism. A dozen construction companies, should be selected by the Government, to address a need estimated to 500.000 units. At the same time, takes place on the site of "Zoranje" an exhibition of green technology that has the most advanced products in the field of sustainable development, the green technologies that are currently implemented in Haiti, in areas such as solar energy and wind power, waste management, water purification, clean cooking, etc...
