Haiti - FLASH : Nearly a thousand Haitians escape military controls and enter Mexico

Nearly a thousand Haitian migrants with rucksacks on their shoulders, managed to illegally bypass military fences and checkpoints set up by the Mexican Government on the southern border with Guatemala (to prevent the spread of Covid- 19 and the increasing migration to the United States), arrived in the last hours in Tapachula, Chiapas.

Many Haitians gathered on Tuesday in front of the offices of the Mexican Commission for Refugee Assistance (COMAR) to apply for a legal residence permit in the country.

In Comar, the process is slow and this leaves thousands of migrants from various countries in Central America and the Caribbean trapped in this region https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-33574-haiti-mexico-2-459-haitians-applied-for-refugee-status-in-3-months.html

Men, women and children, of different nationalities in large groups, without sanitary measures, exceed the capacity of the COMAR authorities.

These events are occurring amid a record number of migratory flows, as evidenced by data from US Customs and Border Protection (CBP), which detained more than 172,000 undocumented migrants at the border with Mexico last March, of which nearly 19,000 were minors.

The National Migration Institute (INM) promised last week to install 17 shelters on the southern border, in the States of Chiapas and Campeche, to protect around 7,000 unaccompanied or accompanied minors. But in Tapachula, families with children under 5 still seek refuge throughout the city to avoid spending the night on the streets.
