Haiti - FLASH : Canal on the Massacre River in Haiti, Dominican President Abinader raises the tone
Thursday June 10, 2021, in an exclusive interview granted to the National Palace to the Dominican newspaper El Nuevo Diario, President Luis Abinader insists on the need for a mutual agreement to settle the controversy surrounding the construction of an irrigation canal in the Haitian territory from the Massacre River (the Rio Dajabón), which he considers an "arbitrary" and "one-sided" action.

The Dominican President regrets that Haiti has started the work without informing the Dominican authorities, despite the fact that there is an agreement on the management of water at the border stressing that the Dominican Republic cannot allow intervention on the rio Dajabón, "which has its source mainly in the Dominican Republic without the advice of the Dominican Government. It is simply unacceptable for us ," conditioning the resumption of bilateral discussions on this issue

"We want them to stop building the canal first, and then we can discuss a combined and efficient management of the border water resources. But they must stop the construction of the canal, it is our demand."

"We are convinced that they will take a reasonable stance and stop the construction of this canal. Warning, "If they don't stop it in the next few days, they will have an official response from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Dominican Government."
