Following the agreement signed on September 20, 2010 on the rehabilitation of the State University Hospital of Haiti (HUEH) https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-1230-haiti-reconstruction-50-million-for-the-haiti-s-state-university-hospital.html heavily damaged by the earthquake of January 12, 2010, the first phase of work will finally begun. With a capacity of 500 beds, the HUEH is the largest hopital in the country. Its operation is a necessity for the Haitian capital. France and the United States will co-fund this project [for a period of 4 to 5 years] at a cost of $ 53 million including 3.2 million from the Government of Haiti.

Alix Lassègue, the Executive Director of HUEH declared "we will demolish all the buildings that were badly damaged and that can no longer use. For example, the building of Pediatrics, the laboratory, part of the department of internal medicine, water towers, part of the outpatient clinic. In the next two months all of these buildings will be demolished.

The new hospital will not be based on a pavilion concept as at present, it will be a two-storey structure [to the anti-seismic standards] in which there will be any basic services and specialized services. In this new concept of hospital, there will be many ambulatory service, for example you come in the morning and you leave in the afternoon. This implies the existence of a technical platform, X-ray, laboratory, RMI scan, endoscopy will be available, so that the ambulatory medicine become an essential point."

The ambition of the Haitian partners is that this achievement constitutes a reference in terms of training, by the quality of its management and care that will be provided. This Franco-American cooperation for the rehabilitation of the HUEH reflects the spirit of solidarity that exists around the reconstruction of Haiti.
