Haiti - DR : 178,000 Haitians intercepted at the border

From July 2020 to August 2021, 178,000 Haitians (nearly 500 on average per day) who attempted to enter Dominican territory illegally were intercepted at the border and repatriated to Haiti.

"Border surveillance is a demanding task, the land border (391 km) is guarded by 9,800 soldiers, including special forces (commandos and hunters) from the army, regular units and the Specialized Border Security Corps (CESFRONT), which provide day and night surveillance, and use drones with thermal cameras for night vision," explained the Dominican Minister of Defense Lieutenant-General Carlos Luciano Díaz Morfa.

In addition, military deployment at the land and sea borders has made it possible to effectively combat drug trafficking. The Dominican Navy has seized (Barahona, Juancho, Pedernales and Cap Rouge) more than 7,400 kg of drugs from Haiti in the past 12 months.

But severe blows were also carried out to contraband, where more than 48 million units of cigarettes, more than 100 tons of garlic and nearly 40,000 containers of alcoholic beverages from Haiti were intercepted and seized during smuggling attempts through the provinces of Montecristi, Dajabón, Independencia, Elías Piña and Pedernales.

Remember that since July 2021, due to the situation of political instability in Haiti after the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse, the “Gavión Plan” has been activated in order to further strengthen border surveillance.
