Haiti - AUF : 1.4 million euros in support for the universities of Haiti in the Great South
Friday September 10 Marie Lucie Joseph the Minister of National Education accompanied by the Rector of the University Agency of La Francophonie (AUF) Slim Khalbous, announced that the Agency, as part of a solidarity plan, was offering an aid of 1.4 million euros intended to support the public universities of the Great South and the University of Notre-Dame in order to facilitate the start of the academic year and actions related to research and the empowerment of young people after the destructive earthquake of August 14 2021.

AUF, the world's leading university network (1,007 universities, large schools, university networks and scientific research centers using the French language in 119 countries including Haiti) in a spirit of solidarity, mobilized 60% of the amount in its own funds and the remainder will be financed by other actors and components of the Francophonie.

Rector Khalbous presented the three main components of this solidarity plan developed by AUF in consultation with the Ministry of National Education.

1. support of 500,000 euros for public universities in Les Cayes, Nippes and Grande-Anse and the University of Notre-Dame which should facilitate their return to university through a structuring online training system, also participating to the digital transformation of teaching in these universities.

To this end, 6 connected spaces will be open, powered by solar energy, outside the current university buildings, with a capacity of up to 600 simultaneous students. 2,000 tablets will also be made available to students. More than 300 teachers will benefit from workshops with certification training in the field of distance education, as well as a recording studio for educational videos;

2. The development of the financial autonomy of students and young graduates, mainly women, thanks to the strengthening of the Solidarity Network for Business Creation Support (RéSACE) program, which will give priority to the development of companies located in the South of Haiti.

For the next two years, AUF and its partners will finance more than 75 businesses led by young people, at the rate of 10,000 US dollars per company, and will welcome more than 300 young people from the Great South in the incubation workshops of RéSACE;

3. Continuation of support for action research in the field of seismic risks in Haiti through the installation, by young Haitian researchers, of so-called "citizen" seismological stations in dwellings located in the departments of the South.

Thanks to this network, created by the Geosciences Research Unit (URGéo) attached to the Faculty of Sciences of the State University of Haiti (UEH), data is made available to seismologists in real time and to permanently. The young Haitian researchers selected will participate, through their action, in high-level research in the field of reducing exposure to seismic risks in Haiti, in partnership with universities that are members of the AUF international network.

For Saulo Neiva, Director of the AUF Regional Office, "the official launch of this plan reflects AUF's commitment to Haiti" adding that this commitment is part of the emergency phase relating to the earthquake but also "in the agency's modus operandi, which places active solidarity at the heart of its projects for the development of universities, the sharing of academic experience and the professional integration of young people."
