Haiti - Education : Open letter of Dr. Josette Bijou to the President Michel Martelly 06/08/2011 13:56:14 In a "cry of the heart" the Dr. Bijou, heavily involved in the promotion of education for all, send its reflections and suggestions to the Head of State to try to do of the next school year a success... "Mr. President, it is true that health is the engine of development, the education is the key that opens the door of development. In my capacity as a committed citizen, politician, Christian, I took for me your idea of making education the priority of your political agenda. So, after deep reflection, I agreed to abandon the fight for the cancellation of the masquerade of November 28, to endorse your candidacy in the elections of March 20. As I have never failed to tell you, this decision was justified by my great desire and my duty to accompany the Haitian people, especially my supporters and sympathizers and allow you to succeed in your term for the benefit of this people, particularly the weak and the marginalized. Today, Mr. President, concerned about the economic situation of my country, I feel obliged to make me the spokesperson for hundreds of thousands of parents and children, who daily request my intervention in one way or another on the issue of the next school year. I apologize if, too close of the excluded and underprivileged of the country, I am unable to say like many others, "You are on the right track." Mr. President, once again I repeat I want your success, because, it will be the country's success and that of the democracy. The time can not be to the flattery, we must tell the truth as it is, is the real path of the success. Our interests are and should be the same. We have a country to save, a people to out of poverty. I know you're a believer. If God recommends the poverty, by cons he condemns the misery. Remember you the Bible, Jesus Christ has not only taughtto his disciples, he fed the hungry, he healed the sick and the maimed. Today he commands us to repeat the same gestures. We will be judged on our attitude vis-à-vis the misery of the Haitian people. The next school year will be your biggest test. It will be necessary to succeed. It has nothing to do with an outgoing Government and/or a new government that is slow to come. Back to school can not wait. Already, it is even too late to talk of reopening in September. In addition, your Excellency, it is great and noble to speak of street children, who deserve all our attention by a full support. But avoid any demagogic attitude. I suggest you also to look in good father, Chief, of a State depleted by various disasters : floods, fires, earthquake, epidemic, on the fate of the children already in school, who for economic reasons will not be able to return in their school in September. To tell the truth, they are legion. I was contacted by principals of non-profit school, who wonder if they will not close "shop" in September. While there is a shortage of classrooms in the country. Mr. the President, I know that you have in your ranks well advised people in the field of education. However, I take the liberty to make the following recommendations:
Your team must get to work quickly, September is tomorrow, if necessary expand the framework of other people who know the situation and which are close to the underprivileged. Currently the children of the wealthy of the country, the majority attend an international school or are sent abroad. This is the reality, do not illusions. Hoping that these few thoughts and suggestions will find a sympathetic ear, I thank you sincerely Mr. President, on behalf of parents and children who rely on my intervention to resume the path of the classes this year. Excellency, please receive my thanks with my patriotic greetings."
