Haiti - 218th anniversary of Independence : Traditional message from Lesly Condé
Message from Lesly Condé :
"Dear fellow citizens and friends everywhere,
I greatly appreciate the privilege of being able to enjoy your precious company as we all greet the start of the year 2021, and welcome the first moments of a year 2022 that we all want to prosper and full of pleasant surprises. The lessons we have learned together in 2021 have made us grow. There are also sublime and irreplaceable moments that time will struggle to erase from our memory. Now is the time to congratulate ourselves on having achieved the goals we had set. As for the resolutions that could not be honored, they will be at the top of the list for this new year.
The start of a new year is always an ideal occasion for a renewal of optimism. We are almost always right to believe that our positive energy will produce excellent results. But the challenges and setbacks of 2021 will still be with us in 2022. The holiday season comes with severe restrictions. I invite you, moreover, to respect all the instructions which are dictated to us. We need to stay in good shape to face the other challenges of the year 2022.
For us Haitians, the first day of January is also and above all one of the most important historical dates. This year, we are celebrating the 218th anniversary of the glorious day Haiti, the First Black Sovereign Nation of the New World, was born. January 1st, 1804 entered in history as the day when slavery was decisively defeated. It was on November 18, 1803, during the famous Battle of Vertières that Jean-Jacques Dessalines, at the head of an army of former slaves, inflicted a humiliating and unmistakable defeat on Napoleon's slave army. January 2nd of each year is also a day dedicated to our valiant ancestors. If the nations of the world do not join us in celebrating freedom, it is because they still do not know it.
At the start of the year, I cannot no thinking to the devastating earthquake that hit our country on January 12, 2010. There are pains that will never go away, and survivors who no longer have any reason to exist. Do not hesitate to make a gesture of solidarity whenever you have the opportunity.
In closing, I wish you all a happy new year 2022 in prudence, peace and security. Aware of all the challenges, I especially wish you enough courage and wisdom to overcome them."
