Haiti - Education : Scholarship students are arrived in Puerto Rico

In recent days, seven young Haitian students are arrived in Puerto Rico as part of collaborative efforts with several local universities to enable them to begin or continue their studies.

Alice Perez, Coordinator of the project "New Haiti" of the Puerto Rico Community Foundation (CFPR), declared that five of these students will follow higher education on the campus of "Rio Piedras" of the University of Puerto Rico (UPR), another will follow a course of study BA and the 7th will follow a course of graduate studies at the "Pontificia Universidad Católica de Puerto Rico" (PUCPR).

She indicated that four other students were scheduled to arrive this week at the UPR, indicating that the CFPR had awarded a scholarship to 9 of the 11 students. The other two have receive a full financial support from their own university and/or sponsor. The handing over of the scholarships to will take place Friday, August 19, to the CFPR.

The arrival of these students was made possible thanks to the initiative "Solidarity University of the Caribbean", a collaborative effort between the CFPR and the Association of Private Colleges and Universities of Puerto Rico (ACUP). This initiative, set up after the earthquake of January 2010 allows young people of Haiti to continue their academic training. Earlier this year, three young Haitians, have begun studies at the PUCPR and to the Universidad Interamericana de Puerto Rico.
