Haiti - Assassination of the President : The extradition of Turkey of Samir Handal stalls
Monday, May 30, 2022, an Istanbul court rejected the request for release presented by the lawyer of Samir Handal suspected by the Haitian justice of complicity in the plot which led to the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse on July 7, 2021 https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-34162-haiti-flash-president-jovenel-moise-assassinated-by-mercenaries-official-updated-7am-+-video.html Handal followed the hearing by video from Maltepe prison (east of Istanbul) where he is imprisoned.

Let's recall that Samir Handal under an international arrest warrant (red notice) from Interpol (since lifted) was arrested in Turkey on November 15, 2021 upon his arrival on a Turkish Airlines flight from Miami.

Regarding the possible extradition request for Samir Handal made by Haiti, nothing really seems to be progressing, the Turkish justice clarified that the Haitian authorities had not yet responded to a letter from the court asking for assurances that if Handal was found guilty convicted, his sentence would be in line with international human rights agreements to which Turkey is a party.

More specifically, Turkish justice wants to know if the crimes that are the basis of the extradition request do not require the death penalty or a sentence incompatible with human dignity. Turkey thus wishes to know the type of penalty incurred (imprisonment, life imprisonment, aggravated life imprisonment, forced labour, etc...) and the period of the maximum sentence, separately for each of the crimes appearing in the extradition request for which accuses Handal. As well as the texts of Haitian law (translated into Turkish) which regulate the alleged offenses constituting the justification for the extradition request. »

For his part Handal continues to deny the charges against him, claiming that his name was cited in the assassination plot for having rented an office to a doctor (Christian Emmanuel Sanon, arrested Haiti in July 2021 https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-34210-haiti-flash-arrest-of-one-of-the-intellectual-authors-of-the-assassination-of-president-moise-and-an-attempted-coup.html charged in the assassination ) claiming that he was unaware of any conspiracy when he made this hire to this doctor.
