Haiti - Agriculture : Installation of an aquaponic system in Kenscoff
As part of the Aquhaiti Project, launched last June https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-36844-haiti-kenscoff-launch-of-the-aquhaiti-project.html , an initiative led by the Tecnova Technological Center, the Spanish CIDEAL Foundation and the Haitian Solidarity Association for Rural Development of Kenscoff (SOHADERK), with the support of the Spanish Agency for International Cooperation for Development (AECID), work has been carried out to install innovative technology on a plot of the Lefrevre Experimental Farm in Kenscoff.

This technology specifically consists of a multi-tunnel structure of 800 m2, where an area of 600 m2 is combined indoors for the cultivation of vegetables and 200 m2 for the installation of aquariums (fish farming or aquaculture). The infrastructure is equipped with innovative technology, but easy to use and maintain, such as a shading system, a fertigation machine and a drip irrigation system, or a pumping system and motorized valves.

For the cultivation of vegetables, a cultivation system without soil in substrate (called "enficonado") will be installed, which will allow better control of soil-derived pest and disease problems. And on the other hand, the aquaponics system is equipped with three bathtubs, one of which is intended to recirculate and pump water, for its disinfection, through various systems, including a biological filter and an ultraviolet system.

The installation work has been successfully completed. At present, pepper seeds are in a seedbed in the germination phase, to be transplanted into the crop in a month. In coordination with SOHADERK, it was decided to invest in a first stage in the cultivation of peppers, because it is a product with high added value in Haiti.

Once the seedlings are transplanted, a cultivation cycle of about 4 months will be carried out, and during this period it will be precisely accompanied by training in all the necessary modules that will allow the target group to manage the technology autonomously.

Learn more about aquaponics :
To this end, it is proposed to implement the technique of aquaponics, which combines hydroponics and aquaculture. Aquaponics consists of the cultivation of plants in symbiosis with the breeding of fish. It is an ecosystem in which three types of organisms are involved: Fish, whose droppings are the source of nutrients for plants, in the form of fertilizer. Aerobic bacteria that transform manure into nitrates that can be assimilated by plants in mineral form and cultivated plants that purify water.
