Haiti FLASH: The lives of thousands of Haitian children are triple threatened
The United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child in Geneva is deeply concerned about the serious violations of children's rights in Haiti. In a context of renewed violence, children's rights to life, education, drinking water, sanitation, health and nutrition are threatened.

Given the growing insecurity, the majority of children have not gone to school since the start of the school year on October 3rd, 2022 https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-37801-haiti-education-back-to-school-defeated.html and after the failure of that of September 5 https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-37497-haiti-flash-date-of-the-start-of-the-2022-2023-school-year-postponed-official.html

Moreover, since the beginning of October and after three years without reported cases, cholera has returned to Haiti, threatening the health, well-being and even the lives of the 1.2 million children living in areas where cases of cholera have been reported https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-37795-haiti-flash-cholera-back-in-haiti-fear-of-epidemic-the-un-ready-to-intervene.html

According to UNICEF projections, nearly 100,000 children under five suffer from severe acute malnutrition https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-37997-haiti-crisis-more-than-18-of-the-population-at-risk-of-very-high-malnutrition.html The situation is alarming because malnourished children are even more exposed to the growing cholera epidemic https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-37889-haiti-health-for-the-first-time-famine-is-in-haiti.html

Faced with rising violence, insecurity and economic hardship, many of the poorest Haitian families lack access to clean water, handwashing soap and other sanitation facilities. base, which increases the risk of catching cholera https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-38028-haiti-cholera-6-departments-affected-nearly-3-500-suspected-cases-and-89-deaths-reported.html . In addition, hospitals are only able to offer limited functions, due to both fuel shortages and insecurity.

Many Haitian children live in fear of being recruited, kidnapped, injured or killed by armed gangs. Children as young as 10, the vast majority of them girls, were subjected to gang rapes for hours in front of their parents, amid an explosion of gang violence. One in four girls and one in five boys have been victims of sexual abuse in the Haitian capital. https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-37890-haiti-flash-sexual-violence-a-weapon-used-by-gangs-to-instill-fear-report.html

The international community must act immediately to help national authorities guarantee the right of millions of Haitian children to live, grow, learn and thrive in a climate free from violence.

For her part, Najat Maalla M'jid, the representative of the United Nations (UN) on children's issues, described as "alarming" the situation in which children live in Haiti.

"We need to strengthen the comprehensive protection and prevention system for all children, it is very important that when they are here they have access to services, we need to end violence and detention of migrant children, the current situation in Haiti is worrying and the UN makes an alarming report on the situation."
