Haiti - Tourism : Fruitful talks of Minister François at the Caribbean Tourism Summit
A delegation led by the Minister of Tourism, K. Cassandra François participated last week in Jamaica in the Caribbean Tourism Summit 2023, organized by the Global Center for Tourism Resilience and Crisis Management (GTRCMC) an initiative of the Jamaican Government and of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO).

The GTRCMC is a global think tank that focuses exclusively on building resilience and managing crises caused by natural disasters, pandemics, climate change, political instability, war and insecurity, and disrupting the l tourism industry.

This summit emphasized the opportunity for the Caribbean countries to build the resilience of the sector, to diversify the tourist offer and to develop a form of beneficial collaborative competition between them in order to be able to benefit to the maximum from the positive effects of that sector.

On Friday, February 17, Minister François participated in a panel discussion alongside the tourism ministers of the Cayman Islands, Kenya and Botswana on resilience and tourism recovery strategies.

On the sidelines of this summit, Minister François held several prospecting meetings :

She had exchanges with a Spanish firm, promoter of the Malaga City project, which develops virtual reality and smart technologies in the city of Malaga and offers its services without compensation to Caribbean countries.

Minister François initiated with Razna Saad, Founder and CEO of Tuzmo (first global platform connecting travelers with local artisans) discussions aimed at medium-term collaboration with the Haitian artisanal sector for the marketing of their works through the world.

Ms. François also met with her Botswana counterpart, Ms. Philda Nani Kereng, to explore avenues of collaboration between the two countries.

We also note a meeting with the representative of the Latin American Development Bank (CAF) in order to explore opportunities in terms of investment in private and public projects as well as avenues for collaboration for the financing of related sustainable tourism and ecotourism projects. It was agreed to continue the discussion in particular to facilitate the integration of Haiti into CAF as a member and define a partnership agreement.

Finally, note the talks between the Minister of Tourism and the "International Tourism Investment Corporation" (ITIC), a group specializing in attracting and facilitating investment in the tourism industry around the world. The Minister requested their expertise and support to help her Ministry set up plans and business models with the aim of attracting investors in the field of construction of major tourist facilities.

Let's recall that for her part Raïna Forbin, President of the Tourist Association of Haiti (ATH) on a radio station of the capital had drawn up on February 8 a gloomy portrait of the tourism sector in Haiti "[...] The situation of the tourism sector is catastrophic [...] Today we have less than 100,000 visitors per year compared to 500,000 to 600,000 between 2015 and 2017. The sector has been in free fall for more than four years. We have lost 50 to 70% of direct and indirect jobs in the sector..."
