Haiti - Education: The Town Hall of Port-au-Prince presents its Municipal Plan of Education
Last Friday, the Town Hall of Port-au-Prince presented its Municipal Plan of Education focused on education, citizenship and the environment, which aims to the emergence of a new society.

Nadège Joachim Augustin, assessor mayor of Port-au-Prince has explained "...this local education policy said that in school, children are not there just to learn to read and write [...] but that there is lot of things that need to be integrated in education, so that the children do not know just read and write, but that we train children to become citizens. The two points that are most important in our local education plan this year, it is education for citizenship and the environment [...]

The citizenship is because we want to train people [...] who can live in a society, who have good manners, a know-how [...] we also train learners, it means that when the child will leaves school it is ready to continue to learn [...] we want to rebuild its spirit, help it to rebuild its life to become a useful person today and also tomorrow, an ambassador to creates a new society.

[...] If you look at the environmental aspect, we really need a support for the environment. [...] We must start with very young children because they have an ease of learning, an open mind and they are the ones that are destined to become tomorrow's society [...] We believe this is the most durable investment that we can do at the level on this issue with children.

We want to reform the society through the education that we give to the children. Today, it is not a tool we have done for the City Council is a tool for the city, for the municipal schools, for education. For us or any other council that will comes after us, it is a tool that will continue to serve for education [...]

This policy is applicable in municipal schools. It is the nationa education that deals with the school in general, but we have the full power over municipal schools. This program can be applied, because it is not a program that comes from the the program proposed by the national education, it is only one way we have chosen to offer this program..."
