Haiti - ALERT : Intense heat wave in Haiti (Advice)

Currently, in Haiti, the meteorological situation since the beginning of the week presents characteristics of intense heat. These high temperatures (up to 38 degrees) due to a haze of sand from the Sahara, combined with considerable humidity, create uncomfortable and potentially dangerous conditions for the health of the population. Coastal regions and urban areas are particularly affected, increasing heat-related risks. This weather situation can have harmful consequences on the population, particularly with regard to dehydration, heat stroke and respiratory problems.

Faced with the risk of intense heat, the Permanent Secretariat for Risk and Disaster Management (SPGRD), the Hydro-Meteorological Unit of Haiti (UHM) and the Directorate of Civil Protection (DPC) call for caution, it is essential to take preventive measures to protect their health and that of their family.

Measures and advice :

Hydrate regularly: Drink plenty of water throughout the day, even if you don't necessarily feel thirsty. Avoid sugary drinks and alcohol, as they can make dehydration worse.

Protect yourself from the sun: Wear lightweight, light-coloured, long-sleeved clothing and a wide-brimmed hat for sun protection. Also use sunscreen with a high protection factor.

Avoid the hottest hours: Limit your outdoor activities during the hottest hours of the day, usually between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Look for cool, shady places when you must go outside.

Use means of cooling: use fans, air conditioners or water sprayers to cool yourself at home (kote ki gen kouran elektrik). If you don't have access to these amenities, take cool showers or place wet towels over your body to cool down.

Watch for heat symptoms: Watch for signs of dehydration and heatstroke, such as headaches, dizziness, nausea, muscle cramps and excessive fatigue. In case of severe symptoms seek medical help immediately.

Protect the vulnerable: Children, the elderly and people with chronic illnesses are more likely to be affected by heat. Make sure they stay well hydrated and have access to cool places.

Raise community awareness: Share these prevention tips with those around you and your community. Organize awareness campaigns on the risks associated with intense heat and the precautionary measures to be taken.
