Haiti - Canal conflict : A Haitian delegation in the Dominican Republic today
Dominican President Luis Abinader has warned Dominicans to avoid traveling to Haiti due to the dangerous situation in the neighboring country.

He explained that given the situation with Haiti and the construction of an irrigation canal in Haiti with a water intake on the Massacre River, considered illegal by the Dominicans, the main thing was to maintain national security and not to allow water from the Masacre River to be diverted.

Abinader reaffirmed that he will do whatever is necessary to defend the sovereignty and interests of the Dominican Republic affirming that the Dominican Army was ready to face any situation at the border "In terms of security, the border is reinforced and will be again."

He clarified that currently the Government of Haiti has many limitations in decision-making, since those who control a good part of the country are gangs and reiterated that the Dominican Government will not negotiate with criminal gangs.
