Haiti - Environment : US$22.4 million for the Trois-Rivières watershed

Sunday, December 3rd, 2023, on the sidelines of COP28, Mrs. Veronica Marquez, Representative of the Green Climate Fund (GCF) and Pradeep Kurukulasuriya, Executive Director of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), in the presence of the Haitian delegation led by Mrs. Gerty PIERRE, Director of the Climate Change Department of the Ministry of the Environment, signed an agreement in Dubai for the implementation of the project "Enhanced resilience to climate change in the Trois-Rivières watershed (Northern Haiti) by integrated flood management" the result of a long process started in 2017.

This project, funded to the tune of 22.4 million US dollars, aims to promote : ecosystem solutions for flood management on more than 25,000 hectares of land in the Trois-Rivières watershed; climate-resilient agricultural practices to limit degradation in the targeted watershed and finally the strengthening of governance and capacities of both national and local state authorities as well as local communities for climate-resilient integrated water resources management (IWRM) resilient to climate change.

During her intervention, Ms. Pierre expressed her satisfaction with this funding, which is aligned with the first two National Communications on Climate Change and the National Adaptation Plan. She took the opportunity to thank the GCF and the UNDP for this very important support and affirmed that all efforts will be made to be able to achieve the set objectives.

It should be emphasized that this project, which will be implemented under the leadership of the Ministry of the Environment with the support of UNDP and Heifer International over a period of 8 years, will be strongly based on an intersectoral approach in order to be able to address the multiple and multidimensional issues and challenges.
