![]() Haiti - Social : Food insecurity increases with the cessation of imports 08/04/2024 09:40:37
Since March 5, 2024, the country's largest seaport has not received any ships, according to the Caribbean Ports Service (CPS). As a net importer of food products (70%), Haiti is particularly vulnerable to malfunctions at ports and airports, fueling shortages of different products and particularly affecting the supply of food products. FEWS NET is closely monitoring the evolving security situation and its impact on the flow of supplies to markets, prices and population movements, among others, all of which are determining factors in the acute food security situation in Haiti . The upward trend in food prices observed in February continued in March despite a decline in annual inflation. Rice, whose prices increased by nearly 6% between January and February, is the most consumed staple food in Haiti. Price collection is not yet complete for March, but some merchants have already increased the price of a 25 kg bag of imported rice to an above-average level due to forecasts of difficulties in restocking the local market. Compared to the five-year average, prices for all products tracked in February are atypically high, exceeding 75% for vegetable oil and even 100% for products such as imported or local rice, corn kernels and beans. Finally, below-average precipitation, with irregular spatial and temporal distribution, was recorded over the last three months. This irregularity in the spatio-temporal distribution of rainfall, combined with the insufficiency or absence of assistance to already decapitalized farmers, as well as the high cost of agricultural inputs, has led to delays and a reduction compared to the normal soil preparation and sowing activities for this year's spring agricultural campaign.
