Haiti - Economy : Laurent Lamothe speaks to investors
Yesterday afternoon, at the forum "Invest in Haiti" Laurent Lamothe, the Foreign Minister, in front of hundreds of investors and businessmen, has praised Haiti and of the business opportunities. He explained that Haiti had currently "the more pro-business administration in the history of thi s country" and that soon it will be possible to start a business online, in just two steps with a new platform for e-government.

Extracts from the speech of Minister of External Affairs :
"[...] Haiti needs massive investments, we all know that but today is the day where investing get it's official kickoff. Thank you to President Moreno of the IDB for your strong support for the investment in Haiti thank you to President Clinton and the Clinton Fundation for coordinating the investors coming to Haiti and thank you to the men and women that made this event possible today.

This will be the kickoff to creating jobs that will form the active part of our social inclusion program, all haitians needs to benefit directly from investments in to this country. This will be a win win strategy both for the investors bottom line and for Haiti and the Haitians families.

In the first five month of government we have taken significant steps to encourage private investments into Haiti including a strong communication campaign by the President of the Republic himself, promoting a new image of Haiti around the world [...] a change in the way we do diplomacy in this country from a traditional to a business diplomacy, from now on every embassies and consulates have the given instructions to promote a different image of Haiti, an image of hope, an image where things will be done the right way, every embassies and consulates will have personnel that will push investments and commercial activities, we will recruit people with business background to better communicate the investment possibilities in Haiti.

We want to show a new Haiti, a Haiti that is small [...] but that has pride and dignity and wants to be competitive in attracting foreign investor. We will not rest until investments start flowing into this country, so the question is what's the government doing to change uses and inaction and lack of leadership in decision making. As you know it all starts with leadership since the past four weeks our governement has formed the Presidential Investment Advisory Board [...] this board will promote the new image that we want to show of Haiti, and will advise the President of Haiti on the best investment opportunities, we have thirty two board members from the most prominent people around the world to carry out the message of change.

This week some major announcements have already been done, Marriott has just signed an agreement to come to Haiti. We're very proud and happy about that. The CFI will be reinforced, will be to become one-stop shop, a new E-government platform is being put in place, this platform will enable businesses to be form quicker. It will go from a twelve-step process to a two-step process and will be done online.

[...] Ladies and gentlemen the time is now, the time to invest in Haiti is today, Haiti has a democratically elected government, The President of the people was elected with sixty eight percent of the vote which is basically a record in the history of the politic in Haiti, we have political stability, we regaining the political stability, the climat of investments is now, now more that ever. [...] might not be perfect, but rest assure that we are working day and night to make this project, this project to bring investments a huge success for the benefit of ten million haitian citizens waiting for us to do the right thing. Give Haiti an investment chance, we are open and waiting for you with open arms.

Thank you"
