Haiti - Politic : Impact of American aid on Haiti over the last 10 years

According to the State Department, over the past 10 years, U.S. assistance has helped 105,000 farmers increase their crop yields through improved techniques and seeds, generating nearly $30 million in sales and $15 million in private sector investment in agriculture.

- U.S. assistance for water security and sanitation over the past five years has increased sustainable access to safe drinking water services for more than 350,000 Haitians and helped increase access to sanitation services for more than 78,000 others.

- Thanks to U.S. assistance, more Haitians have access to police services following the construction of several police stations. The United States helped the Haitian National Police (PNH) establish a community policing unit aimed at building public trust. In addition, the role of women in the police has been amplified. This is reflected in recruitment efforts to target more women in order to make the HNP more gender inclusive.

- The United States also supports the PNH’s anti-gang intervention unit, known as SWAT, through logistics and control contracts, which provide facilities support, equipment, training materials, and recruit vetting. From 2022 to 2024, the United States supported the recruitment and training of 137 new officers and is providing ongoing training for the entire 130-person unit, which continues to conduct complex anti-gang operations.

- The United States provided technical assistance to the Superior Council of the Judicial Magistracy (CSPJ), which is responsible for the management, supervision, and evaluation of members of the judicial system. The CSPJ has since vetted 44 judges and prosecutors to ensure they have the moral and professional integrity to serve in the justice system. Through this system, a total of 25 judges and prosecutors have been approved, helping to renew the accountability of members of the justice system.

- The United States supports comprehensive primary health care through a network of 170 primary health care facilities, many in rural and remote locations, with : rapid availability of family planning methods; antenatal, delivery, and postnatal care services; routine immunization to protect people from preventable diseases, including vaccines for childhood diseases, cholera, and COVID-19; treatment of malnourished children; case management, post-exposure prophylaxis, psychological support, and a hotline for survivors of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV); they also support HIV/AIDS prevention, care, and treatment services with antiretroviral therapy and provide pre-exposure prophylaxis to prevent HIV transmission among people at high risk. Our assistance has improved access to and quality of basic health care at these clinics, reaching more than four million of the most vulnerable.

- In early 2024, the United States announced an additional $58 million in humanitarian assistance for Haiti. This brings USAID’s total emergency assistance in Haiti to nearly $171 million, reaching more than 1.5 million people with life-saving assistance since October 2022. With the additional funding, USAID will support the United Nations and partner nongovernmental organizations in providing in-kind food assistance, infant and young child nutrition support, essential health services, and SGBV prevention and response activities. The funding will also strengthen assistance to internally displaced persons through resettlement support, psychosocial support services and the distribution of safe drinking water.
