Haiti - FLASH : The United States freezes its funding for the Mission in Haiti

While Kenyan President William Ruto had stated on January 26, 2025, that Trump supported the Multinational Mission https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-44149-haiti-flash-trump-s-position-on-the-mission-in-haiti.html and Marco Rubio before his inauguration as Secretary of State had also declared the same thing https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-44076-haiti-news-zapping.html , Tuesday, February 4th, 2025, Stéphane Dujarric, Spokesperson for UN Secretary-General António Guterres, said "We have received official notification from the United States of immediate suspension" of their financial contributions to the Multinational Mission for Security Support (MMSS) in Haiti.

This measure comes at a time when the international force needs more money, equipment and men. An announcement that was made just hours after the arrival in Haiti of a military contingent of 70 Salvadoran soldiers https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-44210-haiti-flash-arrival-of-a-new-contingent-of-70-salvadoran-soldiers-video.html

A measure that freezes for the moment $13.3 million in aid out of the $15 million already paid to contributors' funds by Washington (1.7 million having already been spent).

Secretary of State Marco Rubio has proposed an exemption for the rescue programs, but confusion reigns over what qualifies for an exception to the freeze.

This measure is part of President Trump's suspension of freezing all foreign aid for 90 days, the time for a complete review of these investments and to ensure that they are in line with new American policies. A measure that notably suspended the operations of the main aid agency of the American Government, USAID.
