![]() Haiti - Diaspora : Tribute to Anténor Firmin 31/05/2025 10:35:53
The event, which brought together nearly a hundred people, including Haitian and French figures, students, and members of Haitian diplomatic missions in France, featured a screening and lecture of the documentary film "Between the Sword and the Pen, or On the Equality of Human Races," directed by Arnold Antonin. The documentary retraces Anténor Firmin's political career, his time in public administration as a minister and ambassador, his reforms, his struggle for power, and his exile by various governments. The screening was followed by presentations by Jean-Marie Théodat, Director of the Geography Department at Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne University, and Éric Sauray, Doctor of Legal Sciences and Attorney at the Val-d'Oise Bar. Both speakers highlighted Anténor Firmin's intellectual courage in the face of the racist theories of his time, his almost prophetic observations on Haiti, and the current relevance of his visionary and universal thought. Ambassador Louino Volcy, who moderated the screening, emphasized the importance of perpetuating the intellectual legacy of Anténor Firmin, considered the greatest Haitian thinker of all time. He emphasized the need for the Haitian people to become familiar with this remarkable man, of whom Jean Métellus declared: "Haiti has not, to my knowledge, produced a more broad-minded person since Toussaint Louverture." One could say that Firmin is the Toussaint Louverture of the mind…". Ambassador Volcy expressed his determination to rescue Firmin from the oblivion, indifference, and misunderstanding that surround him, by demonstrating the relevance of his ideas and refuting the idea that they are obsolete. Éric Sauray has placed Anténor Firmin's work at the heart of major critiques of European racial ideology. In it, Firmin develops an ethical anthropology, based not on biological differences, but on the universality of the human condition. "This thought, long marginalized, today nourishes contemporary reflections on decoloniality, global justice, and equality between peoples. Firmin's work, driven by the ideal of natural, political, legal, and social equality between all human beings and between nations, invites us to rethink humanity from a perspective of dignity, mutual recognition, and historical justice. A highly topical message, for Haiti and for the world." Jean-Marie Théodat praised the formal audacity of Arnold Antonin's film, conceived as a reflective and poetic dialogue. The documentary, alternating between vivid colors and black-and-white sequences, gives voice to Firmin himself, offering a mystical and critical narrative, far removed from the classic biopic. For Théodat, Firmin appears as "a historical, mythical, and political figure, recalling the thwarted political trajectory of the intellectual ahead of his time, often isolated and misunderstood. His destiny is reminiscent of that of other great Haitian figures such as Daniel Fignolé." By reviving the memory of Anténor Firmin, the Embassy of Haiti in France is not just celebrating an anniversary. It is also part of a process of transmitting thought and heritage, of reflection and commitment. HL/ HaitiLibre
