Haiti - Economy : Business Associations and Chambers of Commerce gravely concerned 24/01/2026 09:29:00
In a statement, business associations, chambers of commerce, and private sector organizations expressed their "grave concern regarding the current political tensions," which are occurring at a particularly delicate time for Haiti as the country approaches major institutional deadlines. "[...] At this stage of the transition, the country can no longer be drawn into sterile confrontations, strategic maneuvering, or hasty decisions. Stability, restraint, respect for commitments and the rule of law, as well as the continuity of the State, must prevail. This fragile period demands calm, responsible leadership focused on the common good. The signatory organizations wish to state this clearly : any political initiative likely to plunge Haiti back into uncertainty, institutional paralysis, or further disorder, which could also delay the electoral process, would be irresponsible. In this spirit, we reiterate with the utmost firmness our commitment to institutional stability and unequivocally support the position of the Coordinator of the Presidential Transitional Council, Laurent Saint-Cyr, expressed in his message of January 20, 2026, calling for broad, structured dialogue among the various sectors of national life, institutional accountability, and the maintenance of stability as essential conditions for safeguarding the national interest. Download the full text of Saint-Cyr's correspondence (PDF in French) : https://www.haitilibre.com/docs/correspondance-Laurent-SAINT-CYR-CPT.pdf Over the past few months, under the leadership of Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé, tangible progress has been made in the fight against insecurity, thanks to the efforts of the Haitian National Police, the Armed Forces of Haiti, and their international partners. These gains are fragile, but real, and they come at a human cost. Today, the fear has shifted sides. Political instability at this stage directly threatens the coordination of security operations, jeopardizes international support, demoralizes forces engaged in complex and high-risk operations, threatens to erase hard-won progress against armed groups, and exacerbates the despair and suffering of the population. The signatories reiterate that the current transitional framework establishes clear deadlines and responsibilities. Consequently, we call upon all institutional actors to immediately refrain from any unilateral or destabilizing actions, to prioritize dialogue and consensus among the vital forces of society, and to act with a profound sense of historical responsibility toward the Haitian people. We can no longer condone a dynamic in which the State is weakened by avoidable crises while the Nation struggles for its survival. The organized private sector remains committed to contributing to lasting stability, preserving institutional continuity, defending the rule of law, and supporting an effective and peaceful transition leading to credible elections, the only path to democratic renewal."
