Monitoring Washington's commitments on IDPs and the repatriation of migrants in Haiti 01/05/2026 09:48:50
On Thursday, April 30, 2029, Sandra Paulemon, Minister of Planning and External Cooperation, met with Grégoire Goodstein, Head of Mission of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Haiti, to discuss the follow-up to commitments made during high-level discussions held in Washington, D.C., between the Minister and Amy E. Pope, IOM Director General. https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-47346-washington-haiti-s-minister-of-planning-met-with-the-iom-directorate.html The discussions focused on ongoing and developing initiatives related to the management of internally displaced persons (IDPs) and the forced repatriation of Haitians in irregular migration situations. These initiatives included strengthening registration systems, improving the monitoring of affected populations, and identifying durable solutions, including return, resettlement, and integration. The discussions led to progress on concrete strategies aimed at better organizing the reception of returning migrants, structuring the institutional presence, and supporting local communities. Actions are being defined regarding socio-economic reintegration, with the development of targeted programs for at-risk youth and displaced persons. Minister Paulemon reaffirmed her commitment to transforming migration into a driver of development by activating concrete mechanisms for mobilizing the diaspora, particularly through support for local entrepreneurship, the development of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), and the structuring of economic initiatives in strategic areas. Sandra Paulemon also drew attention to the problem of fragmented interventions and called for strengthened coordination and better harmonization of partner actions, based on national priorities. She emphasized the need for an action plan or co-optation framework spanning six to twelve months, with clearly identified priority areas and specific performance indicators. Grégoire Goodstein commended the progress made under the Minister's leadership, as well as her commitment to improved coordination of international aid. He reaffirmed that the Government's priorities are imperatives for IOM's actions. Goodstein assured the institution of its commitment to further aligning its interventions with these strategic directions and reiterated IOM's commitment to working closely with the Government to achieve concrete, sustainable, and measurable results for the benefit of the population.
