Haiti - Tourism : Signature of a tourism partnership with Mexico
In order to develop a "tourism development plan" for the Great South and the North Department a partnership agreement for a period of one year, was signed Friday between the Ministry of Tourism and a delegation of experts of FONATUR (Fondo Nacional de Fomento del Turismo), a public body, directly under the Ministry of Tourism, which is responsible for the development of tourism in Mexico.

Mexican experts of FONATUR under this agreement, will provide technical support to a team of Haitian technicians of Ministry of Tourism, to make a diagnosis on the tourism potential and develop and implement a methodology of work, to move forward with the tourism development program in Haiti.

This agreement follows a meeting of Stéphanie Balmir Villedrouin, the Haitian Minister of Tourism, on April 13, 2012 in Cancun, Mexico, with Alejandro Enrique Carrillo, the Director of FONATUR and to the signing on July 4, with Gloria Guevara Manzo, Mexican Minister of Tourism, of a cooperation agreement to promote the economic and social development of Haiti through its tourist sites.

A technical team of FONATUR is in Haiti since Thursday, Aug. 2 and has already visited by helicopter, the Great South (Jacmel, Côtes-de-Fer, Port-Salut) and some cities of the Northern Department, to make an initial visual diagnosis on the tourist potentialities of these regions.

The Minister of Tourism, which provides among other things,to create tours and resorts in these areas, emphasizes on the necessity of a program for land use planning, of a urban plan, with construction standards "We can not talk about development, or tourism without a strategic plan that allows to determine in advance the ways to do [...] There is a large hotel chain in the Caribbean which is a lot interested in coming to invest in Haiti, but we can not accept them without presenting them a development plan." The Minister promised that before the end of the year, a first draft of the development plan for these areas will be ready "It is at this moment that we will be able to invite investors."
