Haiti - Reconstruction : Haiti now wants to better control the assistance received from donors

The President Michel Martelly, accompanied by the Prime Minister, Laurent Lamothe, the Ambassador of Haiti in Washington, Paul Altidor, the Ambassador of Haiti to the United Nations, Jean Wesley Cazeau and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Pierre Richard Casimir, participated Thursday, September 27, 2012 in Manhattan, to a high-level meeting with Haiti's partners, including donors.

Former U.S. President Bill Clinton and the U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton attended the debates and defended the cause of Haiti, for the effective management of international aid. Other important personalities, including the Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations in Haiti, Mr. Mariano Fernandéz, spoke at the meeting, which should give a new direction to the flow of aid in Haiti.

At this meeting, it was a question for the Government of Haiti, to present to the international community its new structure to coordinate the aid granted to Haiti. The Haitian State was able to have the opportunity to gave an update on the efforts already made in the reconstruction of the country.

In his intervention, the President Martelly stressed the necessity, that the aid to Haiti should focus on the long-term development. He believes that frank and supportive relationships with partners, are essential for the good result of cooperation with Haiti, which now intends to find the best development strategies, based on a coherent agenda.

The Haitian government now wants to better control the assistance received from donors to move towards the real needs of the people "It is necessary to intervene, but especially plan so that aid is managed professionally," insisted the President Martelly and Prime Minister Lamothe, before more than twenty representatives of organizations and international donors. In transparency, a good agreement with all sectors, donors, NGOs, private sector and others, and with the introduction of this new leadership at the head of the Haitian Government, the Head of State and the Prime Minister, expressed their determination to reduce poverty within families, and are ready to adopt procedures to get there.

The meeting resulted in the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding for Foreign Assistance Cooperation Activities in the Republic of Haiti, which establishes this new dynamic initiated by the administration Martelly-Lamothe.
