Haiti - Economy : Large companies must change their business model
At the 43rd World Economic Forum in Davos (Switzerland), which brings together more than 2,500 participants and 50 Heads of State, the Prime Minister, Laurent Lamothe declared that he wants that the large companies which are present in Haiti through foundations change their business model and invest directly "In my interviews, I saw that there was an interest for Haiti. What we ask is that the companies change the way they do business, that they pass of the Foundation to investment."

He does not want more than people think that Haiti is a place to set up a charitable organization, but as a place to start a business. "In Haiti, companies can make equal or better than any big country," declared the Prime Minister.

The reasons are many willing to invest, indicated Laurent Lamothe, citing : the privileged relationship of Haiti with the United States, its geographical location and the awareness, that the country has many needs to solve, that represent potential of business "In Haiti, we need more electricity, more water, more roads, as many business opportunities." The Prime Minister has developed an action plan based on direct contacts with business leaders, that he implemented at the Davos summit [Coca Cola, Western Union, Heineken, Unilever and Accenture] and has already obtained of promises of investment, from Heineken and new projects with Coca-Cola.

"We have some things that few countries have, we have a preferential agreement with the United States, and geographical proximity is a big advantage. We also have a preferential regime for textile production [...] we export to the United States without paying taxes and we have a very aggressive investment code and incentive, which allows companies, during 15 years, not to paying taxes and the free transfer of capital and profits.

The Prime Minister stressed that the main challenges was to convince entrepreneurs that their investments will find the legal security in Haiti "We are actively working on this issue as well as on the issue of security. Haiti is a safe place with 6.5 crimes per 100,000 population, a rate comparable to Long Beach (USA)."

The Prime Minister declared that Haiti hopes to attract high-end tourists and multinational investors. While recognizing that this is an "ambitious dream for a country where 52% of the population lives below the poverty line," Laurent Lamothe made the promotion of the concept of building a real tourism industry in Haiti during various meetings with various CEOs "Haiti is open for business [...] We will not depend on assistance indefinitely."
