Haiti - Politic : Import ban on Dominican poultry products, no Agreement...

Monday, following the ban on imports in Haiti of poultry products from the Dominican Republic, a high-level meeting was held in Santo Domingo between a Haitian Commission led by Pierre Richard Casimir, Minister of Foreign Affairs, composed of Thomas Jacques, Minister of Agriculture, Jean Claude Barthélémy, Chief of Staff, Regine Lamour, Executive Secretary of the Joint Bilateral Commission, Michel Chancy, Secretary State for animal Production and former ambassador to Haiti Friz Cineas, and a Dominican Commission, led by Carlos Morales Troncoso, Minister of Foreign Affairs, composed of Luis Ramon Rodriguez, Minister of Agriculture, Juan Andrés Pla Gómez, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yajaira Sosa, Vice-Minister of Industry and Trade, Lissette Gomez, Director of Animal Health of the Directorate General of Livestock, Rubén Silié, Dominican Ambassador to Haiti and Roberto Martínez Villanueva, Executive Director of the Joint Bilateral Commission.

According to Pierre Richard Casimir, this mission was part of a diplomatic reciprocity approach and of strengthening of the dialogue initiated with the Dominican Republic by the administration Martelly-Lamothe to harmonize relations between the two states.

After about four hours of discussion, the two Commissions have failed to agree on a resolution solution to the conflict between the two countries, resulting from the ban by Haiti, of the sale of poultry products from the Dominican Republic.

Following this meeting, the Dominican Ambassador to Haiti, confirmed this information, even as he pointed out, it has been clearly demonstrated that there was no bird flu [H5N1) in the territory Dominican. He explained that the Haitian delegation would now return to Haiti to consult and eventually it will schedule a future meeting.

Leaving this workshop, members of the Haitian Commission have refused to comment, before getting into their cars to return to the country.

According to the Minister of Foreign Affairs Dominican, the decision taken by the Haitian government will not affect bilateral relations between the two countries, stressing that relations between Danilo Medina and President Michel Martelly "are very very good".

Recall that the Dominican Republic since 2008 has invested nearly one billion U.S. dollars in the production of eggs and chickens, it has two major production facilities and is the largest producer of eggs and chickens in the Caribbean. The Haitian market in this sector represents 30% of Dominican sales.
