Haiti - Economy: Towards the creation of a national label of consumer products

The Haitian Bureau of Standards of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, is continuing its training sessions around the certification and conformity assessment of consumer products in Haiti. These training are part of a competitiveness program and of strengthening of export capacity for regional integration of Haiti, funded by the European Union and implemented with the technical support of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization.

Thursday in Port-au-Prince, the international expert Ivorian Yapo Francois Ahoti, led a training session for four Technical Standards Committees : Technical Committee on Standards for Tourism (hotels and restaurants), the Technical Committee on Environmental Standards, Technical Committee on Construction & Civil Engineering Standards and Technical Committee on food standards.

These committees that will be responsibleto work on the development of standards, will then strengthen the BHN. This is a Haitian National Standards Council, whose task will be to homologate the Haitian national standards.

This phase of work will take time stressed Yapo Francois Ahoti "It can take 12 to 18 months to establish the first Haitian standards. Naturally, we will not reinvent the wheel. Standards exist elsewhere, we will build on what exists. It is not a question to import a standard but to adapt them to the specific realities of Haiti," announcing the establishment of a mechanism that will ensure the implementation of standards through the inspection process, but also of product certification.

After this training, a step will allow to deploy the standardization process. A national label for the identification of Haitian products will be created.

Friday, the Technical Committees have met at the Ministry to begin reflections on national standards in specific domains.
