Haiti - Agriculture : The Argentinean program Pro Huerta extended until 2016
The continuation of Pro Huerta program developed by the National Institute of Agricultural Technology (INTA) of Argentina and the Ministry of Social Development of that country has been confirmed. The Union of South American Nations (UNASUR) will pay $3 million after the signing of an agreement with Argentina and Haiti that will extend the program of national cooperation Pro Huerta until 2016.

The agreement was led by the Prime Minister, Laurent Lamothe, the Technical Secretary of UNASUR in Haiti, Rodolfo Mattarollo and the Ambassador of Argentina in Haiti, Raul Sebaste.

"At present the Pro Huerta program in Haiti has reached nearly 140,000 people in 10 departments," said INTA.

The contribution of $3 million to the project, from UNASUR, will help to almost double the scope of the program in Haiti, which will benefit more than 220,000 people.

Anglesio Francisco, President of INTA recalled that "The Pro Huerta program is a public policy, which already has more than 20 years of development in our country [Argentina], with excellent results, benefiting more than 3,5 millions Argentineans that produce their own food. It is a program, which is a symbol of food sovereignty and the efforts we make to get there."

In collaboration with the Argentinean Ministry of Social Development and the Chancellery of Argentina, INTA technically leads the program with a team of specialists who work with their Haitian counterparts since 2005.

The three institutions will ensure the presence of Argentinean technical experts in the field: for the development of vegetable gardens, nutrition education, seed production, management and access to water, the manufacture of tools and the family poultry.

Anglesio stressed "Our goal in Haiti with Pro Huerta, is to contribute to food security by promoting the production of fresh food, with organic gardens to supplement the diet of urban and rural populations with unmet basic. Argentina assures the provision of inputs such as seeds and tools, reservoirs and poultry feed, in addition, to integrate a network of more than 2,800 promoters and 600 local organizations, motivated and committed to the development of Haiti."
