Haiti - Education : Martelly met the youth Haitian
The President Michel Martelly, accompanied of Prime Minister, Mr. Laurent Salvador Lamothe, has gathered, Wednesday, October 17, at the National Palace, thousands of students of certain non-public schools and non-public of the country. On the occasion of the commemoration of the 206th anniversary of the death of Jean-Jacques Dessalines, the Head of State wanted to awareness the youth Haitian on his political vision consisting in offering a better life for the population, by focusing on the program of free education and the ideal Dessalinien.

In his speech, Mr. Vanneur Pierre, Minister of National Education and Vocational Training (MENFP) has indicated that there are 10.114 schools beneficiary of the Universal Schooling Program Free and Compulsory (PSUGO), noting that this academic year, 68 schools are ready to be inaugurated, more than 500 others are being rehabilitated and more than 140 fundamental schools are awaiting construction.



In addition, the Head of State declared "To enable children to have a better chance to succeed in life, we have asked the Ministry of Education to establish a program to provide vocational training since the 7th fundamental year. This will enable all children to acquire good knowledge in the professional field, when they will reach the 9th fundamental year. In January 2013, we will start with several schools [20 schools, there will be 12 vocational training centers, and 12 trades taught : plumbing, computer, electrical, painting, masonry, carpentry etc...]."

About Higher Education, the Head of State, at the Municipal Palace of Delmas, last September, had fruitful discussions with representatives of the student community around the issue of the functioning of the State University of Haiti (UEH). During these meetings, it was decided :

In the short term :

  • The establishment of a Support Office to assist the students in preparing their output memory ;
  • The publication of a presidential decree on compulsory social service (with a possible bonus of stages) ;
  • An Assistance (donation) of 18,000 gourdes per year per student (now the number of students is estimated at 22,000) ;
  • The distribution of a number of scholarships of specialization to the students.

In Medium and long term :

  • The construction of a university campus in West ;
  • The creation of a gateway of communication between the Executive and the academic community on a permanent basis.
