At the celebration of the 55th anniversary (1 January 1959) of the takeover of Fidel Castro (87 years) to Santiago (Cuba), the Cuban President Raul Castro in his speech, referred to the date of independence of Haiti which also coincides on 1 January and declared that Haiti could always rely on the cooperation of Cuba "Cuba and Haiti had to pay a high price for daring to confront the dominant empire [...] brotherly people of Haiti Cubans will never abandon you, and you can always rely on our modest cooperation," a statement highly applauded by thousands of guests attending the ceremony statement.

Raul Castro recalled that Haiti had made the first revolution in the region of Latin America and the Caribbean, "it was also the first and only victory of a revolutionary movement led by black slaves, who fought against the shameful system and for national independence."

Remember that Haiti is a member of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC), of the energy alliance Petrocaribe, and also an observer member of the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America - Peoples' Trade Treaty (ALBA - TCP).
