Haiti - Reconstruction : Housing in Morne Lazarre and Canapé-Vert Square
Friday, as part of the component "Housing and Community Infrastructure" of the 16/6 Project aimed at rehabilitating 16 neighborhoods in the metropolitan area of Port-au-Prince that were destroyed by the earthquake of January 12, 2010, President Michel Martelly, proceeded, to the ceremony of delivery of construction works in Morne Lazarre.

Built on an area of 2,270 m2 belong to the beneficiaries, the Project Morne Lazarre includes 25 units of family housing, built on two or three levels and 14 have an area of 60 square meters, 6 of 50 m2 and 5 of 70 m2. The construction work, which lasted 16 months (December 2013 to 16 April 2015) was funded by the Haiti Reconstruction Fund (HRF) and the American Red Cross up to 900,000 US dollars and executed by the United Nations Office for Project Services project Support (UNOPS).

This work ceremony took place in the presence of Harry Adam, Director of Housing Construction Unit and Public Buildings (UCLBP), Michel Bonenfant, representative of UNOPS, Ms. Jolicoeur Yvanca Brutus , Acting Executive Officer (Mayor) of Pétion-Ville and members of community associations of the zone.

The Head of State took the opportunity to stress that this project participated to the willingness of his Administration to facilitate access to basic services and income-generating activities to the public and invited residents of Morne Lazarre to take care of the infrastructure that are the result of concerted efforts of the Haitian state, foreign partners with the participation of the local community. The President Martelly has symbolically handed over the keys to one of the 25 apartments to one of the beneficiaries of the project.



The representative of UNOPS and the Director of the UCLBP presented their thanks to the Government, donors and people in the community for the success of this project. For her part, Ms. Elise St. Paul on behalf of the beneficiaries, thanked the Government and international partners.

Back Morne Lazarre, the Head of State, accompanied by the Mayor of Port-au-Prince, Pierre Richard Duplan, warmly welcomed by the youth of the community, proceeded to the inauguration of the renovation of the Canapé-Vert Square, whose work was funded by the public treasury to the tune of 29 million gourdes, from the PetroCaribe funds and directed by the Haitian firm TECINA under the supervision of UCLBP which ensured the conduct of works.

The renovated Square of Canapé-Vert extending over 3497 m2 was carried out taking account the universal access standards. It includes among others: an amphitheater of nearly 1,000 m2 with terrace (350 seats), a full gym (150 m2), a play area with equipment, a multi-sports area (basketball, volleyball...), a toilet block, walkways, 4 water fountains, etc...
