Friday at Camp Charlie, on the occasion of the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers, which was held on the theme "The Past, Present and Future", Sandra Honoré, Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of Mission, United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (Minustah), in her speech, paid tribute to the Haitian National Police (PNH).

Extract of speech by Sandra Honoré :

« [...] Since the establishment by the Security Council in 2004 of the United Nations Stabilization Mission, Haiti has undergone a remarkable transformation. Today, Haitians are living in a relatively stable environment without existential threat to public order, which was not the case there is almost eleven years when the Minustah was deployed. This transformation could be done through a proud people resolutely committed to building a better future.

That is why I pay tribute in particular to the Haitian National Police, the strengthening and continuing professionalization remain important indicators of stabilization. The PNH is working to the present, being at the community service in order to protect and serve. With approximately 11,900 men and women deployed in the country, advances of the PNH are real on the ground, as well as on the benches of the School of Police and its Academy.

While it will celebrate next June its 20 years of existence [...] some of its components are here with us today, demonstrating the vitality of this young institution: the bike brigade, which offers a service of proximity in the streets of Petionville, Croix des Bouquets and Cite Soleil. A service also offered by the PNH outside Port-au-Prince, Cap Haitien, Gonaïves and in Jacmel ; the canine unit of the Brigade for the Fight against Drug Trafficking, which allowed the seizure of numerous drug shipments transiting in the country ;the Departmental Unit for the Maintenance of Order that allows demonstrators to exercise their right of expression, while preserving the security of persons and property . The PoliTour whose specific mission is highly appreciated by tourists at the Citadelle or near major hotels, and the agents of the EduPol which since April 17,ensure the protection of school children in the vicinity of schools. Finally, I also welcome the presence of the Coast Guard, fire fighters, and trainers of Electoral Security Agents (ESA), which began yesterday the training project for more than 5,000 ESAs whose support to the PNH, by securing the elections this year, will be of paramount importance.

All attest of a Haiti resolute and focused on the future, serving its citizens thirsting for stability and peace. [...]»
