Haiti - Social : Attack at the customs of Juana Mendez

At the border tension increases. Haitians continue to rebel against the decision of closing the Dajabon market because of the cholera epidemic. Yesterday, a group of several tens of demonstrators angry, stormed the customs offices of the town of Juana Méndez (in Haiti).

The Haitian National Police (PNH) and MINUSTAH intervened to disperse the demonstrators with batons.

On the Dominican side, men of the CESFRONT (special unit of protection of the borders) were deployed on the bridge which separates the two countries. Equipped with rifles, bulletproof vests, shields, this special unit was put in position to face any attempt to enter illegally in the Dominican Republic. The CESFRONT did not have to intervene.

The Haitians prevented, a part of the day, the passage of the people and vehicles from the Dominican Republic in retaliation to the decision of both governments to close the border markets.
